Police warn of .eu domain scam
Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 23:21 by Paul Johnson
Beware a firm called Dot Com Avenue, Cambridgeshire Police warned today.

The multi-service firm is thought to have earnt hundreds of thousands of pounds by offering a pre-registration service to companies for the .eu domain names which are soon to be available. It is also thought that many of the firms that have paid to pre-register are not even eligible for the .eu suffix due to their country of business.

Internetters director, Ken Sorrie said;

"You can't pre-register .eu names yet. ICANN haven't appointed any registrars for .eu domains, nor have they said what the qualifications for this role will be. Firms looking to register will have to meet certain criteria such as having their registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Union."

The statement issued by the Cambridgeshire Police went on to say;

"We are aware of dealings Dot Com Avenue has had with companies and organisations as far away as the US, countries in which most companies and individuals are not even eligible to register for a .eu domain name. If anyone has registered with Dot Com Avenue, and has paid them a fee for pre-registration and has not heard anything back, then we would like to hear from you."

The firm behind Dot Com Avenue have also setup two another firms. One trading as .eu Registry Services and the other as Dot Biz Domain Renewal.

A man has been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

If you have any information regarding any of these companies, you are asked to contact DC Faro at Cambridgeshire Police.
