In a sign of the times it has been revealed that global warming is causing significant damage, which cannot be repaired, in the frozen lands of Antarctica. Damning new evidence of global warming has been recorded with the so-called massive Wordie Ice Shelf literally melting away and falling into the water. However it is the disintegration of the Larsen Ice Shelf which is perhaps a sign of the times with an area of 3200 mi.² having broken off since 1986.
It is estimated that Antarctica is the home of 91% of the earth's glacier volume and a perfect measuring ground for the ever-growing impact of global warming. Doomsday reports of years gone by are now history with scientist suggesting that the rate at which glaciers are melting has increased substantially over the last few years. Indeed the UN Climate Panel is suggesting that unless significant progress is made in the area of reduced emissions, the world's atmospheric temperature could in due course increase by between 1.8°C and 4.0°C, although this will not happen overnight.
Despite "emission reduction" gestures by a number of governments around the world, the threat of global warming has never been greater and more work needs to be done in this area as soon as possible. |
