Google is rumoured to be on the verge of announcing the acquisition of micro-blogging service Twitter, which has become something of a hit over the last few months. Twitter allows users to send short messages of no more than 140 characters but the vast array of potential readers online has attracted both business and personal users. While the growth of Twitter has not been without problems, with the service suffering under the strain of extreme popularity in a very short space of time, recent changes have resolved these problems.
There is some debate as to whether now is the best time to sell Twitter, with a worldwide recession underway and finance hard to come by. However, the company would be negotiating from a position of strength and Google would be forced to pay a full price for the business. It is interesting to see that Evan Williams, one of the founders of Twitter, has a history with Google having sold his Blogger business some time ago.
Neither company was available for comment at this moment in time although we await developments with interest and will post an update on the site as soon as possible. |
