In a move which is sure to place Yahoo Mobile in direct competition with Google, today sees the launch of Yahoo Mobile which has been launched across a range of 300 different mobile phones. This is the next stage in the rebuilding of the Yahoo brand which has suffered a serious decline in the last few years and fell behind the likes of Google, and MSN to a lesser extent.
In effect Yahoo Mobile offers a one-stop browser and personalised information system allowing users greater flexibility than that seen to date. Available across a range of HTML enabled mobile browsers and also as an application from the iPhone Application Store, the new system is already proving popular. It is able to integrate a variety of features from Yahoo oneSearch, Yahoo News, Yahoo oneConnect as well as a new service in the shape of Yahoo onePlace.
There is no doubt that mobile Internet and particular mobile broadband will be the next areas of competition as the Internet moves into a new growth phase. The fact that Yahoo has managed to roll out the system across 300 handsets, with the potential for further handset manufacturers to come on board in the future, could be a springboard for the future. There is no doubt that work still needs to be done by Yahoo after a number of false dawns and significant internal disputes. |
