Vodafone jumps on the Twitter bandwagon
Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 00:01 by Mark Benson
Micro-blogging website Twitter has today revealed a new partner in the shape of Vodafone which will allow the company to send out free UK SMS updates to customers. This is a service which Twitter was forced to withdraw last year as costs began to rise to unacceptable levels. However, obviously conscious of the highly successful nature of the business, Vodafone is now offering a free UK SMS update service although this will be limited to Vodafone customers.

Interestingly, while the service is confined to existing Vodafone customers there has been a significant extension to the original application as customers can now send their Tweets by SMS with no other applications required. However, before all non-Vodafone Twitter fans become concerned, it would appear the company is also in talks with at least three other major mobile phone companies in the UK to offer the service to their customers.

The power of Twitter has hit the headlines of late as more and more people switch on to the significant coverage available at the touch of a button. We've also seen a number of prominent figures around the world logging onto Twitter and there is even a suggestion that the UK government will integrate the service into the primary school curriculum. The founders of Twitter have also announced plans to introduce premium paid-for services to business operators which should generate significant income flows in the future.
