As recently reported, both Sony and Microsoft are planning hardware price cuts for their consoles. This reporter speculated that due to Nintendo’s silence on this front, this would mean they would be relying on strong software to shift consoles this year.
But oh no...
Nintendo announced yesterday that the price of the GameCube would be dropping to $99 in the US, which makes it $80 cheaper than its nearest rival.
George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America said,
"Every time a generation of technology has moved into the true mass market, Nintendo has prospered. This incredible new price and our great software offers are designed to accelerate that trend like never before."
There's no official word on a UK price cut, although industry experts predict we could see Nintendo cutting the price of the GameCube to £69 before Christmas in the effort to boot sales and upset both Sony and Microsoft's plans.
Nintendo seem to be putting up a fight, similar to a few years ago when Sega's ill-fated Saturn console was taking a battering from Sony's original PlayStation. Whether its fate will turn out along similar lines though, we'll have to wait and see...
