When Ken and Gill Murdoch, aged 54 and 66 from Scotland, received a solicitor's letter accusing them all downloading illegal music, video and games they were astounded as they had never been anywhere near such material. Davenport Lyons of London accused the couple of sharing the Atari game Race 07 and promptly asked them to pay £500 in compensation and £25 towards costs.
So astounded were the couple that are actually got in touch with Which? magazine and told them exactly what had happened. It was after the introduction of the famous consumer magazine that Davenport Lyons of London dropped their interest and appeared to move elsewhere. Upon further investigation it appears that Mr and Mrs Murdoch are one of literally hundreds or thousands of Internet users who appear to be receiving apparently bogus demands of compensation for file sharing.
However, these claims are real and backed up by evidence although it appears that if you do not secure your wireless router and those in the region are able to make use of your broadband signal it will be you who is liable to a compensation claim for the illegal downloading of music, video or games. This should be a warning to everybody in the UK who has a wireless router. |
