As the race to grab the mobile internet market continues to speed up it has been revealed that Mozilla may be on the verge of releasing a mobile version of Firefox into the mix. In a cunning ruse to throw reporters off the scent there have been a number of press releases about up and coming location detection software which will be available as an extension prior to a full integration with the next release if all goes to plan.
However, while the location detection software which will let you know where the nearest train station, coffee shop, etc is and will be very useful, it is the rumours of a mobile version of Firefox which has really caught the eye. The fact that the browser is part of the Open Source movement means that there will be literally thousands of coders looking to add to the service and introduce new widgets and add-ons from day one.
Just when Google thought it was making inroads into the mobile sector it looks as though Firefox may well steal some of its thunder. It will be interesting to see how this battle goes because they are now starting from the same position in the sector at the same time. |
