While the Zune has received something of a mixed reaction in the market place it seems as though Microsoft see Zune based software at least as an integral part of its mobile operations into the future. Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer has set the internet wires alight by suggesting that while there will not be a Zune based phone as such in the future, the Zune software could well be integrated into the Windows Mobile 7 operating system. But will this work?
The idea is that while Zune software will initially be integrated with Windows Mobile 7 it will also be available for integration with other operating platforms in the future. By setting the Zune software free into the market, although obviously championing the name of Microsoft, the company's array of partners (such as HTC, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG) will be encouraged to use Zune as their multimedia platform in future handsets.
It seems that the threat of Google's Android system has seen Microsoft have a serious rethink of its long term strategy. In the past we have seen the group try to retain as much control and direction as possible over products and software in particular, but now we seem to be in a new age where Microsoft actually trusts its partners! |
