It has been announced that from the spring of 2009 the newly formed Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) will be co-ordinating all areas of e-crime investigation in the UK. However, while this is an excellent move there are grave concerns about how an operation which will be looking into global crimes worth in excess of £100 billion a year can operate on a £7 million three year budget!
As we have covered on this site on a number of occasions, the increase in online crime has gone unchecked for some time with some police forces currently unable to handle investigations into cybercrime. As the credit crunch continues to hit home it seems as though more and more people are taking desperate action and actually responding to a number of unsolicitored rogue offers.
A new PCeU operation is a great step in the right direction but quite how it will be able to administer investigations into cybercrime, train officers while collating information from all around the world on a £7 million three year budget remains to be seen.
The threat of cybercrime has actually grown over the last few years and it is a serious problem with many different avenues and tricks used to try and con people out of their hard earned income. |
