Has Amazon beaten Microsoft in Cloud race?
Thursday, October 02, 2008 at 02:39 by Mark Benson
While Microsoft is already to go with its very own version of the now infamous Cloud system it seems as though they have been beaten to the punch with Amazon launching its own Cloud service, known as EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud). But is this an important race? Does it really matter?

The Cloud system has caused a split in opinion in the computing industry with some adamant that it will change the face of everyday computing and others seeing it as some new trend which will soon disappear. In affect it takes away the need for a hard disk by allow users to download programs, files, etc from a remote server. It also ensures that the software you use will be the latest version as it only needs to be uploaded onto the remote server for all users to have access.

The pricing structure for this system has yet to be fully explained and while it will attract attention from many people, some are still very concerned about holding their files and information with a third party. However, the initial signs are good with many consumers showing interest in the Cloud idea but what the long term future holds is very much open to debate.
