While many thought that Freesat, the joint venture between the BBC and ITV, would not even get off the ground it seems as though it could one day be a major competitor to runaway sector leader Sky. It has just been announced that in the first 5 months of launch Freesat was able to sell 100,000 HD boxes as the reality that an HD ready TV will not receive HD programs without the right hardware starts to dawn on many people.
The Freesat service is a free satellite TV service which offers a massive range of digital TV (around 130 at the last count) and radio channels as well as access to subscription free HD TV content. It seems as though a mixture of good marketing, the Olympics, Euro 2008 and Wimbledon has attracted more customers than even Freesat had expected in the first 5 months.
There are high hopes that demand will actually increase in the run up to the holiday season and the rumour that existing Sky dishes are compatible with the service has only added to the intrigue. More and more people are now being educated in the ways of HD TV and the fact that you need a suitable receiver before you can watch HD programs on your HD enabled TV.
Sounds complicated but it is true! |
