As the IPTV industry takes another step forward it seems as though there may be a global risk to traditional TV companies over the next decade. Projected revenue from IPTV for 2008 is in the region of $4.5 billion against just $2.2 billion in 2007. The number of subscribers to IPTV is set to reach 19.6 million worldwide which not only shows the depth and breadth of the industry but the amount of constant income flows which are surely to follow as the subscriber base continues to increase.
The major market for IPTV is western Europe where there are forecast to be around 8 million subscribers by the end of 2008 – even after taking into account the credit crunch. But why the sudden increase? Why has IPTV become popular all of a sudden?
The main reason for the increase in subscribers to IPTV has been purely and simply broadband and the increased speeds now available to more and more internet users around the world. This together with an increase in online TV technology and falling production costs has created something of a ‘honeymoon period' for the IPTV sector.
Will increased advertising turn people off IPTV? Or will it finally devour the traditional TV industry? |
