Over the last few months we have slowly seen the trust factor in this current government fall to a record low with data thefts and data loses now being reported on a regular basis. We have seen prison officer records disappear, social security information go missing and now we have seen the records of 50,000 RAF personnel disappear in what has been deemed an ‘inside job'. What is actually going on?
The theft of 50,000 RAF personnel records is not only a major blow to the government but it is a major security risk for those involved with concerns that the missing hard drives may have been stolen to order by either fraudsters or terrorists. Even though the government has set up a helpline to assist those who may be affected there is very little which can be done until the thieves show their hand.
It is a massive to the government and falling on the eve of the ID card launch it has delivered what could be a killer blow to the whole ID card project. It also highlights the fact that the IT age has not only assisted those in business and government in collecting and retaining data but it has also opened up something of a goldmine for the criminal fraternity. The pros and cons of the IT and internet revolution have never been so well defined as over the last 12 months! |
