MessageLabs names UK spam hotspots
Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 12:01 by Mark Benson
Quite how useful the list is and what you can actually use it for is debateable but a list of UK spam hot spots has been released by anti-spam group MessageLabs. The figures are based upon the number of spam emails received per business user across the UK and while the results may not be quite what you had expected they do make somewhat interesting reading.

We hereby list the top 5 for your reference as follows :-

5. Sutton, Greater London
4. Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands
3. Petersfield, Hampshire
2. Alton, Hampshire
1. Egham, Surrey

To give you an example of the amount of spam which is being received across the country, business users in Egham are currently receiving an average of 189 spam email a day. When you consider that Fareham, the least spam infested area of the UK, business users only receive an average of 2 spam messages a WEEK you may start to get the picture.

Despite a number of legal developments with regard to spam over the last few years it seems as though many companies are not taking notice. Anybody who receives spam will know that the subject matter tends to change depending on the subjects in the news, products on the market or general concerns of the public. However, remember that the only way to eliminate spam is to report it, as deleting the email in question from your inbox will not make any difference in the long term.
