Sony Ericsson steps into the music breach
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 16:06 by Mark Benson
As we await the rival of Nokia and its ‘Comes With Music' service it seems that Sony Ericsson has stolen something of a march on its rival with the launch of the group's very own music offering, ‘PlayNow Plus'. With the market primed for a major music service to hit the mobile phone industry what better time to launch your own service?

Pure magic..

The Sony Ericsson music service is being launched in conjunction with UK partner Omnifone which has been very quick to ensure the whole world knows about the service. But what is the unique selling point of PlayNow Plus?

The interesting thing about PlayNow Plus, apart from the fact it is available on a number of Sony Ericsson's famous Walkman handsets, is the fact that one subscription fee will allow you unlimited downloads as long as your handset contract is live. However, there is one small drawback in the fact that once you terminate your contract you are only able to retain the use of a maximum 300 song files – no matter how many more you may have downloaded. This element of the service is controlled by the DRM software which comes with each and every download.

It will be interesting to compare and contrast the Sony Ericsson and Nokia services when they are both on the market. However, it is easy to see that they both have their good points and their not so good points!

The usual rubbish. "Pay, er, PlayNow Plus is completely unlimited, covers all major labels, no DRM, get all you want any time you like! This is the biggest deal in mobile music ever! Of course, it'll only play for the duration of the contract, all songs then disappearing. Well, just a little DRM. Honest." Etc. http://tinyurl.com/4m2tjt
