60,000 handheld devices left in black cabs!
Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 17:56 by Mark Benson
A survey of 300 taxi drivers has confirmed that an amazing 60,000 hand held devices, such as mobile phones, memory sticks, MP3 players and laptops have been left in the back of taxis in the first six months of 2008. The breakdown includes 55,843 mobiles and 6,193 other devices which include laptops and PDAs. Is this where the government's missing memory sticks and laptops were left?

While we can mock about the location of the equipment which has gone missing from government sources the fact is that personal security and in many cases company security is at issue. The survey found that the vast majority of equipment was not password protected and literally open to anyone who found the device. When you consider that the memory sticks of today can hold tens of thousands of documents and email contacts there is a growing security issue developing.

A report earlier this year also highlighted how lax personal security is with Equifax finding that 16% of customers store their PIN numbers on their mobile phone and 24% record dates of birth which can be used for identity fraud. Many people believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg and things are far more serious – if that is possible!
