The last few weeks has seen a steady increase in the number of rumours about the Windows Vista operating system and the potential for new operating systems to hit the market over the next couple of years. The latest rumours relate to a suggestion that Hewlett Packard (HP) is on the verge of beginning work on a new Linux based operating system which they hope will eventually compete in the open market with Windows Vista. Fact or fiction?
While executives at HP have denied that plans are in the pipeline it is believed that they are concerned about the growing dependence on Windows Vista, the cost of Windows licences and the fact that competitors like Apple have control of both the hardware side and operating systems for their machines. The notion that Microsoft would be under such pressure would have been scoffed at only a couple of years ago but now there seems to be real movement among Microsoft competitors and the star of Windows is not shining as brightly as it once did.
However, Microsoft has been attacked by regulators all around the world and put under investigation by the US government on numerous occasions and it is still fighting the fight. Bill Gates may be gone but do not write-off the computing giant which is Microsoft! |
