News that a Cisco report has shown the quality of the UK's broadband network to be below the average of the 42 countries studied throughout Europe, North America, Russia, Brazil, India and China has set off alarm bells in the UK sector. The study suggests that the quality of the UK's broadband offering is falling in real terms while others are taking advantage of new trends in technology.
While the difference between the average and the level of quality attributed to the UK's broadband services was not enormous, there is a large gap growing between the UK and the likes of Japan – where investment has been substantial of late. The fact that the UK is currently in the process of arranging funding and regulatory approval for the next phase of broadband expansion in the country has not been taken into account, but it is a little worrying that funding issues are taking so long to resolve.
The UK has been making very good progress on coverage across the country but it seems as though this may recently have been at the expense of the quality of service on offer. Fibre optic networks are already being used in many countries around the world and the UK government, regulators and telecoms groups need to get a move on and try and bridge the gap. |
