For a company such as the BBC to be literally rewriting the internet media industry rules would have been considered a dream only months ago but the iPlayer is changing the landscape and at an ever increasing speed.
Apart from the fact that the iPlayer is proving very popular on the BBC website itself, allowing users to catch up on their favourite programs, a recent deal with Apple has seen it appear on the iPhone and iTouch mediums. However, in order to reach the mobile communications mass market this week's deal with Nokia could literally take the service to a whole new level.
Under the partnership agreement the iPlayer will be available on the new Nokia N96 handset to start with and allow fans to catch up with the likes of EastEnders, BBC News, Sports events and the array of films and documentaries available through the BBC. Using a simple internet connection it will be possible for Nokia N96 handset users to download a program from the ever expanding service and watch it within 7 days before it is automatically deleted.
While the service is paid for by the taxpayer (via the licence fee) and only available in the UK, surely the BBC must be looking for deals further afield, deals which should bring in significant income in due course. |
