Sony Forced To Recall 500,000 PCs
Friday, September 05, 2008 at 14:35 by Mark Benson
In a move which has gone down like a lead balloon with customers, Sony has been forced to begin the recall of 500,000 Vaio laptops worldwide after reports of a fault which would see the device catch fire and injure their owners. This is yet another embarrassment for Sony which was forced to recall 10 million lithium ion batteries in 2006 after concerns grew that they too could overheat and catch fire. So what is happening?

When you consider that this recall will cover around 48 countries worldwide and see Sony foot the bill for repairs to the faulty model it is sure to cost the group literally millions of pounds. However, that is not the full story as there are now concerns that the once whiter than white reputation of the group is in danger as the cumulative affect of these recalls starts to hit home. Once is unfortunate, twice could be classed as unlucky but if it were to happen again it would place pressure on the quality of the group's manufacturing operations and raise questions as to how these issues were not spotted on the factory floor.

One issue which looks set to drag on is the fact that Sony is alleged to have known about this problem since last August but not acted until now – over 12 months later.
