Microsoft Slashes Cost Of Xbox 360 Arcade
Thursday, September 04, 2008 at 00:46 by Mark Benson
News that the cost of the Xbox 360 Arcade games console has been slashed to under $200 in the US has caught out many in the industry. The move is far earlier than many had expected and undercuts the cost of the Nintendo Wii by $50. But is it enough?

While it seems to have been enough to grab the headlines we will still see the Xbox 360 console at $299.99 and Xbox 360 Elite at some $399.99. So are gaming fans being duped by Microsoft's marketing campaign or is there more to come?

The very fact that you are reading this post suggests that the Microsoft marketing campaign is working like a dream but there is concern that this may not be enough to knock Nintendo off the top spot as Christmas gets closers. The fact that we are yet to see the emergence of any real competitors to the Wii motion controller is something of a disappointment and those hoping for a last minute announcement prior to Christmas look like being disappointed.

So who will win the battle of the Christmas sales? Who will come out on top and start 2009 with a bang? At this moment in time do not bet against Nintendo, but that could all change before the big sales push begins.

Microsoft Japan is already actually paying people to take the machines, with little success."We hope more people will be able to enjoy Xbox 360," said marketing marketer Takashi Sensui, "and we can stop enjoying quite so many of them. We also have this fine pile of HD-DVD drives ... Wait! Come back!" http://notnews.today.com/?p=63
