Research by moneysupermarket.com has confirmed what many internet experts had suspected for some time, the number of people ‘piggybacking' on local Wi-Fi connections is growing and could easily become a major problem for account holders. Even though there are simple ways to secure your Wi-Fi connection it seems that one in six are still operating with an ‘open' connection which could cost them substantial money and see them embroiled in criminal investigations.
As we have covered on this site in the recent past, internet service providers are under severe pressure from the authorities to report and cease providing a service to those convicted of downloading illegal copyright material or using the internet for other illegal purposes.
The report also confirmed that one in nine internet users (over 3.5 million across the UK) have admitted to ‘piggybacking' onto a Wi-Fi connection, whether this is their next door neighbour or a local business. This figure is very worrying and more needs to be done to educate internet users to encrypt and secure their Wi-Fi connections as soon as they install the system. It is not difficult, it does not take much time but it could literally save account holders massive expense or even criminal prosecution. |
