In a time when internet connections are getting faster and the 24 hour culture is developing, come surprising details that a third of homes in the UK do not have access to the Internet. The 2008 Internet Access report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) says that 65 percent of homes (16.46 million households) have Internet access. This represents an increase of 1.23 million on 2007.
Overall, more than half (56 percent) of all homes have broadband.
Of the 35 percent of homes that did not have Internet access , the main reasons were because they did not feel they needed it or did not want it. Other reasons included access to the internet or equipment being too expensive. Only 15 percent said they did not have web access because of lack of IT skills.
Not surprisingly there as a link between educational attainment and the likelihood of being online (those with degrees being more likely to be online) and there is also a link with age (those over 65 being less likely to use the Internet).
