SDSL coverage gets extended
Thursday, September 11, 2003 at 10:42 by Rich Kavanagh
Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL), which offers ADSL speeds, but in both directions (upstream and downstream) is set to have its availability widened this month.

A BT spokesman said, "The plan is to enable more exchanges so that we can expand the 'footprint' in these areas."

The areas expected to have their coverage widened are London, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Yorkshire, the West Midlands and Scotland, with 50 further exchanges by January 2004.

As a cheaper alternative to Leased Lines, SDSL services are deemed to be suitable for remote offices (WANs) and the teleworker markets.

BT's IPStream Symmetric product will be available in 256Kbit/Sec, 512Kbit/Sec, 1Mbit/Sec and 2Mbit/Sec.

"Demand is expected to be strong because small and medium sized enterprises can gain real competitive advantage from using this broadband capability.", said Bruce Stanford, Director of BT Wholesale.
