Microsoft have unveiled the Beta testing version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) with no indication as yet of when the final version will be available The test version can now be downloaded and does not offer much on the earlier Beta version that was released in March 2008.
There are, however, some new features in terms of search functions and privacy and being able to keep track of parts of a website. Some experts have said that the new functions have been available on other browsers for some time.
As many people have visited certain websites before, a “smart address bar” has been introduced so that words and phrases and bookmarks of previous sites can be retrieved. Web searching is made easier with search terms instantly displayed. The smart address bar is similar to that used in the latest version of Firefox.
The new version enables groups to be created with coloured tabs. There is also a new browsing mode which leaves no trace of pages visited – similar to Private Browsing functions that are available in Apple's browser – Safari.
Microsoft have said that IE8 has been developed by studying what people require and want, and that functions have been introduced in a user friendly way. Time will tell whether Internet Explorer 8 will be able to hold off competition from other browsers.
