Whether it is a cost cutting exercise by the back door or an attempt to cut the carbon emissions of the Church of England it seems as though the lord will have less daylight hours to see his flock with Churches across the UK being advised to cut back on lighting in the twilight hours.
Despite spending millions of pounds over the last few years to install floodlighting in churches around the country it seems that those leading the church have had a change of heart. Is it a coincidence that this call has come at a time when energy prices in the UK have moved to record levels?
However, it is not only the church which is looking to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions but there is one group around the UK which seems immune from this – the government. A number of reports have highlighted the amount of lighting left on in government offices around the UK when unmanned. While the authorities claim this is for security reasons, surely they must take some kind of lead?
Perhaps now that the church has spoken we will see more people looking to do their bit for the environment and save themselves some money in the process! |
