Should The Xbox Live Be Used In The Political Arena?
Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 20:13 by Mark Benson
Even though the Xbox has become one of the best selling gaming devices of all time in the US there is some concern that the planned move into the political arena may give the group undue influence. The computing giant has signed up with US activist group ‘Rock The Vote' to increase the participation of younger voters in the forthcoming US election. But will this move give Microsoft too much of an influence on the material which younger voters are presented with?

The move will allow literally millions of younger voters the chance to register to vote via their Xbox and see them participate in a number of online polls, the results of which will be available for candidates to review. While those behind ‘Rock The Vote' are ecstatic that they will now have access to the majority of younger voters there are concerns that this impressionable band of voters may be influenced by the material which will be available online and in forums on the Xbox network.

The fact that Microsoft has signalled its intention to present the views of Xbox users to candidates personally could leave the group open to claims of bias and see the computing giant muscle into the political scene. ‘Rock The Vote' hope to attract an extra 2 million younger voters to the political arena by the time of the election and the Xbox is just one of the mediums being used.
