| Wind Power At Its Best |
| Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 18:51 by Mark Benson |
News that a UK based scientist is currently waiting for a window of opportunity in Australia to test his land yacht and go for the wind-powered land speed record has caught the eye of many in the energy sector. While the record breaking attempt should see Richard Jenkins able to travel at up to 120mph in his vehicle it is more the revelation that his revolutionary device can harness wind power and use this to propel a manned vehicle at 6 times the speed of wind!
The technology which he uses is more akin to Formula One cars than yachts but it has the potential to change the landscape of the wind based energy sector forever. If the technology used in the device can some how be replicated into a wind turbine (or water turbine) then the efficiency levels would see wind power move into the upper echelons of the energy industry.
Jenkins made an earlier attempt at the record in 2005 but this had to be aborted when he lost control of the vehicle at 106mph just short of the current record of 116.7mph held by American Bob Schumacher. He claims to have beaten the current record twice in trials and is ready to be subjected to officials who will monitor the event and the speeds which he reaches.
