It is turning into something of a roll call of government departments with news that the Ministry of Justice is the latest government office to admit to significant loss of data records. It has been revealed that a number of instances have occurred over the last 12 months which include the loss of 27,000 employee records of suppliers dealing with the Ministry of Justice, personal details of 14,000 people who had one fine or more outstanding and the records of many people who applied for employment with the Department.
While some of the data was subsequently returned it has been revealed that in many instances, even though bank details were part of the information lost, many of the underlying ‘victims' were not even advised of the potential security and financial risks.
This latest announcement has attracted a great deal of unsavoury comment from the civil liberty groups as they continue to press for changes to the proposed national database which will contain very personal and sensitive details on each and every person in the UK. If the government is not able to retain existing data in a form which is secure and safe what chance do they have securing tens of millions of very private records? |
