The computer security industry is in the middle of a sustained period of consolidation as many of the major vendors such as McAfee looking to strengthen their exposure to certain areas of the market with data loss prevention the latest buzz word.
In line with the likes of Symantec and EMC, McAfee has agreed in principle to acquire the data loss prevention business which is Reconnex with the deal expected to go through in the third quarter of 2008. At $46 million the acquisition is a minnow in the overall picture but it gives McAfee exposure to a number of useful systems, one being the Reconnex learning technology which adapts itself and responds using a combination of analytics and data mining.
The ability to automate as many security issues as possible is vital to the future of the likes of McAfee as the battle for supremacy in the industry rolls on. McAfee directors claim that this latest acquisition will see the group steal a march on many competitors who have been slow to react to the growing demand for data loss prevention systems.
While the data security market has been growing for some time, the number of leading players has been whittled down to a handful of well known names – McAfee has high hopes of leading the sector forward in the future. |
