In a move which is sure to shake up the UK broadband market it has been announced that O2 is offering customers who take up their £20 a month mobile broadband package, a free home broadband service for 12 months. This believed to be the first such offer in UK and has caught the headlines within the industry. So is it for real?
This offer is the real deal for all O2 customers who are within range of the O2 Home Broadband network and take out the mobile broadband package. The home service will offer speeds of up to 8Mbps and comes with a free wireless router, although the home service is only free for 12 months. Customers who are outside of the O2 Home Broadband network will be able to claim a discount on their package price.
This is a very interesting marketing ploy by O2, allowing customers to take home broadband free for one year, get used to the service and then hopefully stay as a paying customer for the future. As no other mobile phone company is currently offering anything like this service they would seem to have the market stitched up, at least until someone comes in with a rival offer. There appears to be a lot of overlap amongst the broadband companies in the UK and competition has never been as fierce! |
