| Did O2 Miscalculate Demand For The New iPhone? |
| Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 20:32 by Peter Smith |
News that O2 has warned customers that the new iPhone will be in short supply until the end of the summer has raised a few eyebrows. Did O2 miscalculate the demand for the phone? Is Apple having manufacturing problems? Or has demand just taken the whole industry by storm?
O2 is the preferred retailer for the new iPhone and was the first in the UK to make the phone available to customers. Even though the device is now available at a number of Carphone Warehouse branches and Apple outlets, the demand for the phone is far exceeding supply. Such has been the rush that O2 has stopped selling the handsets online and the phone will only be available in retail outlets for the next few weeks.
Taking a step back and a glimpse at the worldwide demand for the new iPhone it is not just O2 which seems to be suffering. Apple is unable to keep up with demand in the US where preferred partner AT&T has confirmed similar problems to those reported by O2. The company is trying to push as many handsets out of the door as possible but is struggling at the moment.
Analysts expect the current short supply to last well into August when demand should start to slow, but then we will have the Christmas rush just a few weeks later. |
