As we reported only a few days ago, the saga of the BT communication to all broadband Tiscali customers in the UK has provoked a further backlash with many customers concerned as to how BT came to be in receipt of their private details. To recap the situation, BT wrote to Tiscali broadband customers in the UK suggesting that the Tiscali broadband operation had an uncertain future and was up for sale. The mail shot went on to suggest that customers may want to transfer to BT's own broadband service, detailing the process for all to see.
While there is speculation that Tiscali would like to forget the issue, as it may lead to some difficult questions in court regarding their plans and thoughts for the UK broadband division, customers are complaining in their droves. Quite how BT was able to gain access to the client list has still to be cleared up, but there appear to be potential beaches of the Data Security Act.
This issue is far from finished with many suggesting that BT may be forced into paying compensation for any customers who leave Tiscali as a consequence of the letter. |
