| How Safe Is Confidential Data Held By The Government? |
| Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 20:09 by Peter Smith |
While the authorities are very fast to warn the wider business markets and general public about the issue of internet security, do they actually practice what they preach? If a recent announcement by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is anything to go by, it seems to be a case of do as we say not what we do!
News that over 650 MoD laptops have disappeared over the last 4 years is approaching twice the number which was previously reported. While only 32 of the laptops have been recovered the small print in the announcement by the authorities also draws attention to the fact that a further 90 desktops and PDAs are ‘unaccounted for'. While the MoD believe that their security measures are ‘fit for purpose' this begs the question of whether the government are taking IT security serious enough?
Let us not forget that this is just one department of the huge UK civil service, the authority which holds very private information on government plans, UK security as well as very personal details on every man, woman and child in the UK. How can the authorities expect the public to support their proposed super database when they cannot keep hold of the information that have already? |
