BSkyB has today announced a new subscription based music service in partnership with Universal Music, one which they will believe will wrestle away a large chunk of music subscription business from Apple. The move is interesting as it offers unlimited streamed music and a set number of downloads per month for a set fee. All of the download data will be DRM free which means that the files can be uploaded to an iPod, etc.
While many have tried to take on the mighty Apple nobody as yet has come anywhere near their power in the market and many up and coming companies have crashed and burned in the process. However, BSkyB is a different challenge as historically they are one of the leading subscription based media providers in the world, turning a business many thought would fail into the UK's leading satellite TV provider.
Subscribers to the service will have access to the Universal Music database which will make literally hundreds of thousands of songs available. There are also plans to recruit more music providers, possibly prior to the launch later this year. The issue of copyright material is also a subject which will figure prominently in the future makeup of the service – exactly how will BSkyB ensure copyrighted music is not abused? |
