Has Microsoft Taken Its Eye Of The Ball?
Friday, July 18, 2008 at 20:54 by Peter Smith
The announcement of the quarterly forecast from computing and internet giant Microsoft had been greatly anticipated by many in the market with some hopeful of an update on the latest attempt to grab Yahoo! Sadly the whole affair turned out to be something of a disaster with the company yet again indicating to analysts that profits would come in under forecasts at between 47 and 48 cents per share, against earlier forecasts of 49 cents.

There was also very little news on the Yahoo! situation except to say that the groups were in talks but there has been little progress of late. Even the directors of Microsoft expressed concern that the confusion with regards to Yahoo! has been causing problems amongst advertisers who are as much in the dark as anyone about what may or may not happen.

To cap matters the group also announced that the online division has lost in the region of $500 million in the quarter with advertising income suffering from the general slowdown in the economy as well as the impact of the Yahoo! affair. With profits falling, short term prospects looking bleak and the Yahoo! situation still dragging on, life after Bill Gates has not exactly gone to plan.
