Computer analyst Steve Prentice has made a rather bold prediction that the age of the computer mouse will be at an end within the next 3 to 5 years, replaced by an array of interactive controls based upon the gaming industry. The humble mouse has been around for over 40 years and is now a well established part of many computer systems, but there have been some changes over the last few years such as touch sensitive pads. So is Steve Prentice very brave or very foolish to call time on the mouse?
It seems to be common knowledge in the industry that the likes of Panasonic, Canon and Sony to name but a few are in the process of putting together an array of new control devices based upon video technology and even thought!
Touch sensitive screens will soon become the norm, but it is the video and thought control systems which are set to catch the eye over the next few months and year. Panasonic is rumoured to be very close to releasing a new controller which will allow you to control you PC by waving your finger in the air and it will even recognise your face and display your personal computer settings and menus.
However it is Sony and Canon that are expected to bring a revolutionary new device to the market whereby you wear a headset and control your computer by thought alone. Quite how that will work remains to be seen, but perhaps the days of the mouse are numbered?
