In a move which is sure to be noticed by all major mobile phone network providers around the world, Vodafone has announced a deal with laptop manufacturer Lenovo. The move will see Vodafone broadband SIMs fitted as standard in a number of Lenovo laptops and offer Vodafone broadband from £12 per month. Many in the market are suggesting that this is both a shrewd marketing move and a strategic advance for Vodafone, repositioning the group for the future.
Interestingly, the move to embed their technology in the Lenovo laptops will see the likes of Carphone Warehouse missing out on intermediate commission for signing up new customers. Quite how this will go down with Carphone Warehouse and the like is unclear, but when you are the size of Vodafone you can afford to take your own path to a certain extent.
The Lenovo laptops which will include the Vodafone SIM are the Thinkpad SL, T and X Series although there are sure to be more to follow in due course. Interestingly, a number of researchers have highlighted the future trend in the laptop market suggesting that many customers will remain with one broadband provider for the life of the machine – especially if embedded with a branded broadband connection. |
