As news that Google has tightened its grip on the UK search engine market filters through to the industry, we have seen a furious response from MSN and Yahoo!, suggesting that it is time that the authorities tackled Google's domination. The response from the lame search engine giants was prompted by news that Google has increased its share of the UK web search market by 10 percentage points to 87.34%.
This leaves both MSN and Yahoo! both under 4% and further undermines their position in the market place. However, many are pointing the finger of blame at the disastrous on-of-on-off merger talks between MSN and Yahoo! which saw respective managements take their ‘eye off the ball' - as if Google needed a gap in the market to exploit!
It has also been confirmed that Google now has an increased share of the US market with figures from Hitwise suggesting a market share of 69.17%, up from 63.98% in June 2007. While Yahoo! has a near 20% share of the US market, there is no doubt that Google is set to increase this share in the short to medium term. The merger debacle has pushed MSN and Yahoo! even further back than they were before! |
