Canadian researchers have come up with a novel style of dentist treatment which will see many patients have their teeth ‘fixed' before normal system would even show there was a problem.
The current system, know in many quarters as ‘drill, fill and bill', relies upon x-rays to spot cavities and problems with teeth, at which point the dreaded dentists drill comes out. This new service known as ‘The Canary' uses laser diagnostics to review the shape, structure and potential problems with teeth.
While the new system still uses the traditional method of checking how teeth react with light, i.e. x-rays, the laser diagnostic kit also allows the dentist to heat up teeth and then review the findings with the laser system. By analysing the glow and release of heat from teeth the new system is able to pinpoint potential problems for the future and use a remineralisation process to affectively cure the problem before is really takes hold.
The Canary will give dentists the ability to locate potential problem areas much quicker than the current x-ray system allows. Thankfully, this should result in less drilling for many patients and hopefully prompt more people to visit their dentists on a regular basis. If successful in Canada the system is sure to be rolled out across the world. |
