As the internet continues to grow, there can be few more poignant examples of this than Second Life, the virtual world created by Linden Lab. For those unaware of Second Life, this is a virtual world where millions of people have their own avatars, their own lives, businesses and income streams – in affect a cyber world.
However, it has been reported that IBM (in conjunction with Linden Lab) has created the worlds first teleportation system which allows avatars (i.e. ‘people' from Second Life) to move between virtual worlds on the internet. The process allowed Second Life users to move to the OpenSim virtual world server and participate in life in another virtual world.
While this may all seem a little far fetched and obscure, the potential for the future is enormous if the system can be tweaked and rolled out to the masses. It could easily be used to transport users into virtual environments where education and social issues could be reviewed, resolved, etc.
The new system has not yet been rolled out, possibly because there was one issue when the avatars were transported between virtual worlds – they arrived naked from their ‘former' lives! |
