Even though competition in the mobile phone sector has always been competitive there can be few battles on the scale of the iPhone v the Blackberry. The battle is set to commence tomorrow when the new iPhone goes on sale in Japan with the sole aim of grabbing a larger share of the business market, a market which Blackberry and owner RIM has dominated for some time. Ding, ding, round one!
The new iPhone has a number of interesting changes including new software and some great new features, but the main difference is the fact that it supports 3G networks and is compatible with the Microsoft exchange e-mail servers – something which will appeal very much to the business end of the market. While the 4 millions sales of the original iPhone will be swamped by the expected 10 million global sales of the new iPhone, it is worth pointing out that the Blackberry has a massive 16 million subscribers worldwide, the vast majority of which are business users.
Interestingly, as Apple reposition their iPhone for the business end of the market, RIM has softened the reputation of their Blackberry model a little and are looking to capture more non-business users. This gives us the potential for a serious head-on clash somewhere around the middle of the non-business / business ends of the market – a clash which should be interesting to watch! |
