As Bill Gates bid a fond farewell to Microsoft last Friday there was already fevered speculation as to what the man who has run the computing giant for over 30 years will do now. While he has his charitable organisations and recently set-up his own investment fund, will Bill be able to adapt to life after Microsoft? Or will it literally kill Bill to say goodbye?
What we have seen in the press over the last 30 years has only scratched the surface of day to day life at Microsoft - the challenges, the tension, the stress and the number of ventures which have been shelved or cancelled altogether. People seem to forget that Bill Gates has had a hands on approach for over 30 years since he set the venture up with his original business partner. Where would be without the forward thinking Gates? Where would we be without Windows? Would the PC revolution have even happened?
While Bill Gates has his critics, with many in the US government happy to see the back of him, he was and still remains a true revolutionary. He is able to put ideas into practice, move markets and crush the competition. Quite what Bill will find to compete with that remains to be seen, but life will never quite be the same again for Bill Gates. |
