| Broadband Speeds Are Not Always What You Expect |
| Monday, June 30, 2008 at 12:47 by Peter Smith |
A recent survey of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, by Moneysupermarket.com, showed that after testing over 20,000 lines across the UK, O2 was the surprising winner. While second and third was Sky broadband and TalkTalk broadband respectively, the survey also showed up the fact that UK broadband customers are not always getting the speeds which they see advertised.
Of the 8Mbps broadband packages which Moneysupermarket.com tested they found O2 top with an average speed of 5.39Mbps, Sky next at 3.59Mbps and TalkTalk at 2.99Mbps, substantially under the 8Mbps speed which is advertised and used to tempt customers in. The survey also took into account the higher speed operations and found that on the whole, comparing the cost of broadband to the speeds actually obtained, the 8Mbps services offered better value for money, with the higher 24Mbps packages offering the least value for money.
While this is nothing new to those who follow the broadband industry, it is interesting to see how much the services fall short of their maximum speeds. It would also have been interesting to see how many customers actually obtained anywhere near the top speeds available. The UK broadband market has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years, but there is still much work to be done. |

| Just to add, this is for ADSL and SDSL only. Cable customers in the UK do actually get 10mb when promised 10mb from service providers such as Virgin Media. |
