In a move which is about a million steps further on than those published, it looks as though the UK authorities are looking at the mother of all computer systems, a system which would affectively record each and every kind of electronic activity carried out in the UK. The system is still very much at the discussion stage but those close to the talks are convinced that the go-ahead will be given sooner rather than later.
It seems as though the system, which is being pushed by the intelligence services, would record the origin and destination of each phone call, internet use and any other communication facility carried out in the UK. While the content of calls and emails themselves would not be recorded, the delivery data could be used to build up a profile of every man, woman and child in the UK – all in the name of security, of course!
This new system, if it comes into play, would supersede all current legislation which only allows the authorities to request certain data from ISP and phone companies, much of which is given under a voluntary code of practice. We may very soon be in a state where big brother is not only watching, but recording your every action! |
