As we covered only a few days ago, Microsoft has been very active in the release of security patches over the last few weeks, highlighting a number of security risks within the various versions of Windows. Just to show that no patch is perfect, and Microsoft does get it wrong sometimes, a revised fix for MS08-030 has been issued for Windows XP.
The original fix was released to stop the undetected automatic download of files in certain situations, and has proved to be highly affective for Windows Vista. However, it turns out that the fix had no impact upon Windows XP leaving many users open to the highly unlikely, but possible, download threat.
Again this has brought the complexities of the Windows operating system to the fore and the fact that no system, not even Windows, is perfect. Indeed many experts have been highly critical of the level of security afforded to certain areas of the Windows system, and the balance between commercialisation of a product and security.
This has to a certain extent opened the door to such operating system alternatives as Linux, the open source movement, but Microsoft currently has a massive lead over any real long term alternative. |
