In a rare move Microsoft has warned users of their Windows operating systems to steer clear of the Safari browser due to a flaw in the browsers software. While Apple, who operate the browser, has been warned about the issue they do not believe that it warrants immediate attention and have advised Microsoft of their position.
The bug itself is connected with the ability of the Safari browser to automatically download files without the authority of the user, giving hackers the chance to flood the system with executable files which can be loaded onto the user's machine. This then opens the door to an array of malicious software which can cause major problems for the user.
The headlines have brought the security of the Safari browser into question but Microsoft has also admitted that the situation is connected with the way in which certain versions of the Windows operating system handle executable files on the desktop. While Apple has dismissed the call for changes to their browser, there are many in the online security industry who feel they need to take the issue more seriously.
It looks as though this saga still has some way to go and it will be interesting to see how it pans out. |
