Essex University is offering the first complete online degree available in the UK – so you never have to worry about missing a lecture, or wearing the wrong colour shirt again.
The courses run 52 weeks, and students will be able to join them several times through the year. A sort of ‘virtual class' at specific times will be held to gather both students and staff together.
The course is to be run by the US education provider Kaplan. The initial courses will begin in July, and include Business and Management, Marketing and Sales Management, Internet Marketing, and Entrepreneurship.
In the US, nearly 7% of post-secondary school education is done online, so this is nothing new when we're looking at the big picture – however, for the UK and schools like Essex, it's an exciting time, and can help open door to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to attend the school.
The press release states, “The first course accredited by the University of Essex for Kaplan Open Learning, Business Studies, will begin in July. There are four Business Studies course pathways: Business and Management; Entrepreneurship; Marketing and Sales Management; and Internet Marketing. It is expected that students will be able to earn a Bachelor's degree from the University of Essex if they successfully complete a third year top-up course. Further courses are expected to follow.”
