Microsoft is going to give Office 2003 some of the security features that Office 2007 has, some reports claim. They hope to bring the best security to a broad range of customers.
No release date as of yet for this service pack, which is going to focus on delivering some of the lessons that Microsoft learned when they were developing Office 2007. “We're trying to take what we learned from building Office 2007 and bring as much as we can to Office 2003.” A technical product manager for Office, Joshua Edwards, said.
The update is extremely unlikely to provide any interface changes, but rather focus on the exploits of the Office suite, and make them less venerable to a hacker. However, most of it is speculation as Microsoft is unwilling to speak about the details that are going into Service Pack 3 (SP3).
The update will be completely free upgrade for all existing users, of course, as any earlier service packs were. A Microsoft spokesman said “We've made great strides in security in the 2007 Microsoft Office release, and we're looking at ways to help Office 2003 users realize some of these benefits. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”
